What are the Types of Doctoral Dissertation?

Doctoral thesis or dissertation is one of the most complicated academic task students complete during their educational life. They fear because their final semester of degree depends upon this assignment. Student satisfaction will significantly depend on the high quality of their dissertation. There is a team of professors or university external will evaluate their work. The more effective or professional thesis paper will accept otherwise the evaluators reject the dissertation. Students always try to make high quality dissertation.  So, the students do not take risk of their important and life determining task.

Before you start to prepare your paper, it is important to figure a few things.

First thing is you should know the subject properly and carry out research if you need to develop an understanding of the certain topic area. Remember that you need to choose a certain topic area for the dissertation rather than trying to cover the entire subject in your research.

Every university follows some format of doctoral dissertation. Follow the guidelines of your university very properly. And also have a list of instructions from your teacher in order to create a professional paper. You need to the same format, style, subject, sources and other specifications that your instructor mentions for the paper.

You must identify the type of the dissertation you will write. Usually academic thesis for doctorate has three major types:

  1. Empirical type
  2. Non empirical type
  3. Narrative type

Also use the words scientific and case study to represent the type of the dissertation.

Empirical Style Project

Empirical style dissertation and doctoral theses need collecting data. You need to find different forms of data including both primary and secondary. You need to determine whether you need qualitative data for your paper or quantitative. Moreover, you will need strong theory however, to support and explain your data.

Qualitative data: Qualitative research focuses on examining the topic via cultural phenomena, human behavior, or belief systems. This type includes interviews, open-ended questions, and a person’s thought and believes.

Quantitative data: Quantitative data is simply statistical analysis of data. It is used for theory testing, prediction of outcomes, and determining relationships between and among variables using statistical analysis. Quantitative data includes primary data collection and secondary data collection.

Non-empirical style project

Non empirical dissertation research does require you to actually physically gather any data; it is library based form of research. This style is usually adopted for formulating theories and discussing them in detail. Do not choose a non-empirical style paper if you are not good at research or find yourself carried away in the midst of your research.

Narrative style project

Empirical and non-empirical styles are the most common type of thesis project. However, you can write your doctoral theses in a less common third style. This style includes going to the laboratory and carrying out certain experimentation to conclude your data and result findings. You need to narrate the results and show the significance of each data in your own words.
